What Is Compost?

Compost is a mixture of organic residues such as leaves and brush that have been piled and allowed to undergo aerobic biological decomposition, a process called “Composting.”


Benefits Of Compost?

Compost provides plants with vital nutrients by improving microbial activity that helps release soil nutrients for plants. Composting is natural, it reduces and/or eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers that can be costly and potentially damaging to the environment.


How To Use Compost?

You can use compost as a mulch for your plants or to mix in a hole for a plant. Compost can also be mixed with some sand and soil to form potting soil for growing potted plants. You can also turn compost into top dressing for grass.

Looking For Enriched Compost Or Mulch?

  • PREMIUM COMPOST

    A mixture of ground brush and green waste. This 100% recycled blend improves soil structure and is ideal for all landscape applications. This rich compost can be used to 20% in the top 6" of a growing area. (Available in cubic yards and 40 lb. bags.)

  • REGULAR MULCH

    Ground Brush will improve soil conditions and protect roots. (Available in cubic yards and 2 cuft bags.)

  • STUMP MULCH

    Ground tree stumps can be used as a decorative ground cover, natural weed barrier and water conserving mulch. (Available by cubic yard.)

  • CHRISTMAS TREE MULCH

    Christmas Trees can be used to protect growing plants in flower beds. The mulch slowly decomposes which provides further nutrients for the plants. (Available in cubic yards and 2 cuft bags).

  • 50/50 COMPOST BLEND

    A mixture of 50% premium compost and 50% top soil. It is perfect for new plants, new flower pots or filling in areas where you would want plants to grow.

Since 2004, the City of McAllen Composting Facility has been producing compost and mulch, earning numerous recognitions for Class A Compost.

Our compost is a Mixture of Ground Brush and Green Waste that is collected from the "Save the Greens" program!

The Goals Of McAllen’s Composting Facility

Our goal is to create, maintain and sustain an organic composting facility that:

  • Contributes to the reduction of organic material entering the landfill.
  • Contributes to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions (methane).
  • Converts organic waste into compost, an organic material that can be reused.
  • Produces taxable revenue to preserve sustainability and promotes local/regional support.
  • Complies with all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Earns positive support from local residents.
  • Includes safety, health and environmental standards.
