What Is Stormwater Runoff?

Stormwater runoff occurs when water from rain or snowmelt flows over the ground.

Why Is It A Problem?

Impervious surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent stormwater runoff from naturally soaking into the ground. This excess stormwater runoff then mixes with pollutants: oil, grease, nutrients, chemicals, bacteria, and sediment, flows unfiltered through the City's drainage system, and outfalls into our watersheds. As you can imagine, this greatly affects the water recreational activities we enjoy as swimming and fishing. Yuck!

The City's Stormwater Management Program aims at educating the public on the importance of maintaining the stormwater quality for protecting our watersheds.

HOW CAN I PREVENT STORMWATER POLLUTION?

Sweep Driveway, Sidewalks, Street Curb and Gutter instead of hosing down with water.

Use City Of McAllen Compost and Mulch Versus Fertilizer

Collect Grass Clippings & Leaves In Our Brown Compostable Bags.

Take Your Vehicle To A Commercial Car Wash.

Properly Dispose Of Pet Waste In The Trash.

Recycle Right! McAllen Recycles: Plastic Bottles #1 & #2, Paper, Cardboard, Metal Cans - Aluminum & Tin, Glass Bottles and Jars.

S.T.O.R.M. Project

Bring the “Only Rain Down the Drain” message to your McAllen elementary schools - 4th Grade Classes by participating in the McAllen Public Works S.T.O.R.M. Project.  The STop pollution! Only Rain down the storm drain, McAllen! Project promotes community awareness on preventing contaminants as bacteria, pesticides, grass clippings and leaves from entering our storm drain system and polluting our watersheds, the Laguna Madre and Arroyo Colorado.  The S.T.O.R.M. Project includes classroom presentations using an interactive Watershed Model, and the opportunity for 4th Grade Students to create a work of art at your school’s nearest storm drain inlet.  To sign up for this project, please contact Delilah Martinez, Stormwater/Environmental Education Manager, dmartinez@mcallen.net.
